Fall Decor: Finding the Balance Between Seasonal and Stylish

The air’s chilly. The leaves are turning. For those of you who haven’t started decorating yet, or for those of you who have but are open to suggestions, this blog post is for you. Some of our favorite decorating elements for fall. What rooms to favor, nooks and crannies to remember, and capturing the fall feeling inside this season with five practical space spotlights.
Entryway
As we mentioned in last week’s blog post, mudroom refreshes are a great way to not only tackle mess and clutter this season, but make the tone of your home feel more seasonally festive. A beautiful wreath with dried florals and warm, rich colors, woven baskets, bowls of apples, pumpkins, or foraged finds. You don’t need much to bring fall to your entryway – just the little details that set the tone for the rest of your home.

Living Room
The living room. The warmest, coziest place to be on a blustery fall day. Relaxing with family, watching a quintessentially fall movie, warming our hands by the fireplace. There’s so much to do with living spaces in fall. Heavy quilts, patterned pillows, knit throws – the best accessories for our favorite midday nap spots. Want to bring the autumnal elements inside? Try sourcing dry branches and florals this season. Trim them to your liking and pair them with an antique vase or pitcher. The fireplace, if you have one, is the focal point in the room. Use this to your advantage. Adorn the mantle with brass candlesticks and a colorful fall garland. Don’t overdo it – the fireplace alone is a statement. Simply emphasize its beauty.

Dining room
The dining room, especially in November, is the heart of fall. It’s where we gather, eat, mingle, and make memories. The same elements you use in the living room can be brought into the dining space. It’s all about the table. Nothing says fall like a hearty meal with loved ones. Again, dried florals and branches are a great, easy way to bring the outdoors in. Collect them, trim them, put them in antique vases as the centerpiece of a table. Candlesticks, tiny pumpkins, beautiful dishware against a stunning tablerunner. The table sets the tone before anyone sits down.

Bedrooms
Fall, as we know, is beautiful. Especially in New England. It’s also a busy time for those of us trying to balance work, kids, activities, and somehow find the time to relax in the midst of it all. Bedrooms can also reflect the seasonal change outside. Light, summer bedding can be swapped for heavier, warmer duvets or quilts. Bright throw pillows can be swapped for rust, olive, copper, and richer tones to deepen the room. Throws can be draped across the bed or the back of an armchair. Bedrooms don’t have to be the forgotten spaces that are given secondhand thoughts in fall. They can be just as seasonal as the rest of your home.

Hallways, Corners, & Nooks
Lastly, don’t forget to give some attention to the smaller, more awkward spaces in your home. The hallway, the corner, the quirky nook. It can be as easy as placing a rich, earthy candle or a stack of antique books on a console table, placing fall trinkets on built-in shelves, or adding a woven basket to a space.
The goal isn’t to overclutter your home but instead honor fall in the details. Seasonal, not sensational.
